Toyota VIN Decoder

Toyota VIN decoder — Camry, RAV4, Tacoma, Tundra, hybrid & EV.

About Toyota

Toyota produces in Japan, Texas (Tundra/Tacoma), Kentucky (Camry), and Mexico (Tacoma). CheckMyVIN decodes the engine code (2GR-FKS, A25A-FKS), drive type, and plant — plus every open NHTSA recall.

Founded 1937 and headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi, Japan, Toyota vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Toyota VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

A 17-character VIN is split into three sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) in digits 1–3, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) in digits 4–9, and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) in digits 10–17. Toyota uses several WMI codes depending on plant and model line — the table below lists the most common.

Toyota WMI Codes

WMIMeaning
JTDToyota passenger car — Japan
4T1Toyota passenger car (Camry/Avalon) — Georgetown, KY USA
5TFToyota truck (Tundra/Tacoma) — Texas / Mississippi USA
2T3Toyota SUV (RAV4) — Cambridge, ON Canada
JTMToyota SUV — Japan
3MYToyota Yaris — Mexico

Where to find your Toyota VIN

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Toyota

Every Toyota report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Toyota issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

2GR-FE / 2GR-FKS water pump
2007–2017 V6 Camry, Highlander, Sienna, RAV4, Avalon
V6 water pumps fail around 100k–130k mi. Symptom: pink coolant on the lower belt and cover. Replacement requires accessory belt R&R; typical $400–$700. Not catastrophic if caught early.
A25A 2.5L oil consumption (early production)
2018–2019 Camry, RAV4 with A25A engine (pre-update)
A small percentage of early A25A engines consumed oil due to a piston ring issue. Toyota addressed it under warranty for affected VINs. Verify oil consumption pattern at PPI.
Frame rust on Tacoma / Tundra / Sequoia
2005–2010 Tacoma, 2007–2008 Tundra (specific VIN ranges)
Toyota ran a frame replacement program for severe rust in northern climates. Many trucks had frames replaced; some VIN ranges expired without action. Check the frame visually and against recall records (CheckMyVIN shows open campaigns).
Hybrid battery degradation (1st-gen Prius eras)
2001–2009 Prius, 2006–2011 Camry/Highlander Hybrid
NiMH hybrid batteries degrade at 150–200k mi. Cost: $1,500–$3,500 for reman; ~$2,800–$4,500 for new. The car continues to run on the gas engine but with reduced fuel economy. Useful as a negotiation point.

Toyota buyer's notes

Toyota is the depreciation benchmark — values stay high. Premium for Tacoma, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and any TRD trim is structural and not coming down. For hybrid Camrys and Prii, battery age matters more than mileage. bZ4X had a wheel-detachment recall (22V-453); confirm the campaign was completed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Toyota Prius / Mirai / bZ4X supported?
Yes. Prius reports as Hybrid (HEV) with both gas and electric maintenance overlap. Mirai is fuel cell (FCEV). bZ4X is full BEV and switches to EV view.
How do I read the Toyota engine code?
NHTSA VPIC returns the engine model directly. Examples: A25A = 2.5L 4-cyl (Camry, RAV4), 2GR-FKS = 3.5L V6 (Tacoma, Highlander).
Where is the VIN on a Toyota truck?
Driver-side dash, driver door jamb sticker, and frame rail (usually visible from underneath, near the front wheel).
Does this work for Toyota / Lexus / Scion?
Yes — all three brands are in the NHTSA database. Lexus has its own brand page; Scion was discontinued in 2016 but legacy VINs decode normally.
How do I check Toyota recall status?
CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA recall API by make/model/year. The result shows campaign number, summary, and remedy — same data your local Toyota dealer sees.
What does TRD mean in the VIN?
TRD (Toyota Racing Development) is a trim level on Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, and Camry. NHTSA VPIC returns the trim — it appears in the report header.
Why is plant info useful?
Toyota production plants vary by powertrain: Tundra 5.7L came from Texas; Camry hybrid from Kentucky; RAV4 from Canada or Japan. Plant can affect parts availability and certain TSBs.
