Volkswagen VIN Decoder

VW VIN decoder — Golf, Jetta, Atlas, ID.4, EA888 & TDI.

About Volkswagen

VW VINs encode the platform (MQB, MEB), engine family (EA888 turbo, TDI diesel, EA827 V6), drive, and plant (Wolfsburg, Puebla, Chattanooga). CheckMyVIN decodes the full spec block and shows every open NHTSA recall.

Founded 1937 and headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Volkswagen VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

A 17-character VIN is split into three sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) in digits 1–3, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) in digits 4–9, and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) in digits 10–17. Volkswagen uses several WMI codes depending on plant and model line — the table below lists the most common.

Volkswagen WMI Codes

WMIMeaning
WVWVW passenger car — Germany
WVGVW SUV (Tiguan, Touareg) — Germany
1VWVW passenger car — Chattanooga, TN USA
3VWVW passenger car — Puebla, Mexico
1V2VW SUV (Atlas) — Chattanooga, TN USA

Where to find your Volkswagen VIN

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Volkswagen

Every Volkswagen report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Volkswagen issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

EA888 Gen 1/2 timing chain tensioner
2008–2014 GTI, Tiguan, CC, Passat 2.0T (EA888 Gen 1/2)
Hydraulic chain tensioner can fail at startup; the chain jumps and bends valves. Catastrophic. Audi/VW issued updated tensioners around 2014. Verify a redesigned tensioner is fitted on anything 2008–2013 with 60k+ mi.
EA189 / EA288 TDI Dieselgate emissions modifications
2009–2015 Jetta TDI, Passat TDI, Golf TDI, Beetle TDI
Subject to the diesel buyback/fix settlement. Most affected cars were either bought back or had the emissions fix installed. Verify whether the fix was applied and whether DPF/EGR have been deleted (illegal and devalues the car).
DSG / DQ250 mechatronic failure
2003–2012 6-spd DSG (GTI, Jetta, Audi A3)
DSG mechatronic unit failures around 100k mi. Repair $2,500–$3,500. Verify mechatronic replacement or recent DSG fluid service.
ID.4 12V battery drain
2021–2022 ID.4
A parasitic drain leaves the 12V auxiliary battery dead. Software update + battery replacement under campaign. Verify update was applied.

Volkswagen buyer's notes

VW used values vary widely by model: GTI holds value, Jetta does not. R32 / Golf R are collectible. Verify all TDIs have legal emissions equipment intact — a deleted TDI is unsaleable in many states. Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are stable used buys; built in Chattanooga.

Frequently asked questions

Is VW ID.4 / ID. Buzz supported as EV?
Yes — ID.4 (US-built in Chattanooga) and ID. Buzz both decode as BEV. EV view shows battery kWh.
How do I tell a TDI diesel from gas VIN?
NHTSA VPIC returns Fuel Type — Diesel or Gasoline. TDI VWs (2009–2015 with the affected EA189 / EA288 engines) are tagged Diesel.
Does the VIN show Dieselgate-era engines?
Not directly, but year (2009–2015) + Fuel Type = Diesel + 2.0L identifies the affected VWs. Any related NHTSA recall campaigns appear in the recall list.
Where is the VW VIN?
Driver-side dash near windshield, driver door jamb sticker, and on the title.
How do I read the engine code (EA888)?
NHTSA VPIC returns engine model when reported. EA888 is the 2.0L turbo I4 family across Golf/Jetta/Tiguan/Atlas.
Where are VWs built for the US market?
Chattanooga, TN (Atlas, Passat, ID.4), Puebla, Mexico (Jetta, Taos, Tiguan), and Germany (Golf R, GTI). Plant is in the report.
Does CheckMyVIN cover Audi, Porsche, Bentley (also VW Group)?
Audi and Porsche have their own brand pages. Bentley/Lamborghini VINs decode through VPIC when in scope.
