Volvo VIN Decoder

Volvo VIN decoder — XC60, XC90, S60, plug-in hybrid & EV.

About Volvo

Volvo Cars (separate from Volvo Trucks) decodes through CheckMyVIN: engine family, drive type (AWD common), plant (Sweden, Belgium, USA, China), and any open NHTSA recall.

Founded 1927 and headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Volvo VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

A 17-character VIN is split into three sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) in digits 1–3, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) in digits 4–9, and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) in digits 10–17. Volvo uses several WMI codes depending on plant and model line — the table below lists the most common.

Volvo WMI Codes

WMIMeaning
YV1Volvo passenger car — Sweden
YV4Volvo SUV (XC60, XC90) — Sweden / USA (Charleston, SC)
LYVVolvo (built in China)

Where to find your Volvo VIN

  • Driver-side dashboard, near windshieldStand outside the vehicle on the driver's side and look at the corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield. The 17-character VIN is engraved on a metal plate visible through the glass.
  • Driver's door jamb stickerOpen the driver's door and look at the door jamb (the frame the door closes against). A federal certification label lists the VIN, tire pressures, and gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Vehicle title, registration & insurance cardThe VIN appears on the title, current registration, and insurance documents. If buying used, cross-check the VIN on the car against every document — any mismatch is a major red flag.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Volvo

Every Volvo report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Volvo issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

D4 / B4 (2.0L Drive-E) timing belt for oil pump
2014+ Drive-E 4-cyl Volvos (S60, V60, XC60, XC90)
Internal oil-pump timing belt requires replacement at 100,000 mi or 10 years. Skipping it = catastrophic. About $1,500. Verify it was done on anything 80k+ miles.
Charge air cooler condensation / boost loss
T5/T6 polestar-tuned Drive-E engines
CAC drainage issues cause condensation, occasional rough idle. Volvo TSB; verify drain mod was applied.
Sensus head unit freezing / restarting
2015–2020 XC90, XC60, S90 Sensus infotainment
Sensus reboots and freezes were common in early units. OTA updates resolved most issues; module replacement was offered. Stress-test the infotainment for 10 minutes.
Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid battery cooling
2018–2020 XC60 T8, XC90 T8 (early)
Battery thermal-management issues addressed by recall / software. Verify open NHTSA campaigns are closed.

Volvo buyer's notes

Volvos depreciate fast — used pricing is buyer-favorable. XC90 holds value better than sedans. P3-platform (2007–2016 XC70/V70/XC60) is mechanically simpler than the SPA-platform Drive-E cars but parts are aging out. Polestar Engineered trim adds 10–15% to used values.

Frequently asked questions

Is Volvo EX30 / EX90 / C40 Recharge supported as EV?
Yes — all current Volvo BEVs decode with Fuel Type = Electric. EV view shows battery kWh and 8 yr / 100k mi battery warranty.
How do I tell if my Volvo is T8 plug-in hybrid?
Fuel Type returns Hybrid for plug-in models. T8 designation appears in the trim field when reported.
Where is the Volvo VIN?
Driver-side dash near windshield, driver door jamb sticker, and on the title.
Does CheckMyVIN cover Polestar?
Yes — Polestar is Volvo's EV-focused sister brand. Polestar VINs (LPS WMI) decode through NHTSA VPIC.
Where are Volvos built?
Torslanda (Sweden), Ghent (Belgium), Charleston (SC USA, S60 and EX90), and Chengdu (China, S90 long wheelbase). NHTSA VPIC returns Plant Country and Plant City.
Does this work for older Volvos (240, 850)?
Only post-1981 VINs (17 digits) decode through VPIC. The 240 ran 1974–1993; later years are supported.
How do I check Volvo recalls?
CheckMyVIN queries NHTSA recall API live. Recent Volvo campaigns have covered seatbelt cables, fuel pump issues, and EV battery charging.
