Yamaha VIN Decoder

Yamaha VIN decoder — YZF-R, MT, FJR, WaveRunner, ATV, recalls.

About Yamaha

Yamaha VINs cover motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides. CheckMyVIN decodes the model line, engine displacement, plant, and pulls every open NHTSA recall on a single page.

Founded 1955 and headquartered in Iwata, Shizuoka, Japan, Yamaha vehicles register their VIN data with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When you enter a Yamaha VIN above, CheckMyVIN queries the NHTSA VPIC database directly — pulling the same federally certified specs that the manufacturer reported when the vehicle was sold.

A 17-character VIN is split into three sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) in digits 1–3, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) in digits 4–9, and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) in digits 10–17. Yamaha uses several WMI codes depending on plant and model line — the table below lists the most common.

Where to find your Yamaha VIN

  • Steering neck (frame, below handlebars)Turn the handlebars to one side and look at the steering neck where the frame meets the front forks. The VIN is stamped into the frame metal.
  • Engine case (separate engine number)Motorcycles also stamp an engine serial number on the crankcase. This is NOT the VIN — it matches engine to bike for warranty purposes.
  • Title, registration & insurance documentsThe 17-character frame VIN is the legal identifier. Verify it matches the title before purchase.

What CheckMyVIN shows for Yamaha

Every Yamaha report includes the decoded specifications (engine, drive type, transmission, plant, body class), every open recall NHTSA has on file for the year/model/make combination, an AI-written plain-English summary, and the maintenance specs CheckMyVIN can confidently match by engine code. Tire sizes vary by trim and are always marked "Varies by trim — check door-jamb label" rather than guessed.

Common Yamaha issues to check before buying

Brand-specific known issues — useful as a pre-purchase inspection checklist. CheckMyVIN does not flag these per VIN; verify against service history.

YZF-R6 / R1 cam chain tensioner (CCT)
2003–2008 R6, R1
Spring-loaded CCT can lose tension and cause valve damage. Verify if a manual tensioner was retrofitted (common aftermarket fix) or whether the OEM was replaced.
FJR1300 EFI rectifier / regulator failure
2003–2012 FJR1300
A weak voltage regulator burns out, then the battery. Common upgrade is a Shindengen MOSFET R/R. Check battery health and any sign of charging-system service.
WR250F / YZ250F valve adjustment intervals
4-stroke motocross / enduro (WR, YZ family)
Titanium valves stretch and need shimming every 50–80 hours of hard use. Used 4-stroke dirt bikes should be valve-checked before purchase. A ticking idle on a hot engine = overdue.
V Star / Roadliner final drive shaft
2006–2017 Roadliner, Stratoliner, V Star 1300
Final drive bearings can fail at 30–50k mi. Subject to TSB. Symptom: whine that changes with throttle.

Yamaha buyer's notes

Sport bikes sell on cosmetic condition more than mileage. Look for tipover wear (clutch lever ends, bar end weights, fairing scuffs). For ATVs, hour meter is more meaningful than mileage. Always verify the frame VIN matches title and that the title is in hand (not "lost / will mail").

Frequently asked questions

How do I read a Yamaha motorcycle VIN?
WMI (digits 1–3) identifies Yamaha + country. Digit 10 is model year. Digits 4–8 encode model family. CheckMyVIN decodes all of this from NHTSA VPIC.
Where is the Yamaha VIN?
Stamped on the steering neck, just below the handlebars on the frame. Engine has a separate serial number on the crankcase.
Does this work for YZF-R6, MT-09, FJR1300?
Yes — any Yamaha motorcycle registered in NHTSA VPIC decodes through CheckMyVIN.
Are Yamaha ATVs and side-by-sides supported?
Yes — on-road and off-road Yamahas with a 17-digit VIN are all in scope.
Are Yamaha WaveRunners decoded?
WaveRunners use a different HIN (Hull Identification Number) format, not a 17-digit VIN. CheckMyVIN only supports 17-digit road/off-road VINs.
What about Yamaha outboards or instruments?
CheckMyVIN is for vehicle VINs only. Outboards have separate serial number systems not in NHTSA VPIC.
Does Yamaha have many recalls?
Yamaha has historically had fuel pump, brake, and electrical recalls. NHTSA tracks all of them; CheckMyVIN surfaces any open campaign in the report.
